RETENTION UNIT: Nature water tank

RETENTION UNIT (Nature Water Tank) consists of vertical ceramic elements placed on reclaimed concrete blocks, each supporting a shallow basin.

The forms are conceived as reduced architectural structures that introduce a specific function: the ability to collect and retain water. This function remains latent until activated by environmental conditions.

The concrete bases are integral components of the work, maintaining their original surfaces and irregularities. Together, the elements establish a minimal system in which structure and function are separated and simplified.

A thought about the importance of water and conscious use of water, Elena Pelosi discovered a region in southeastern Madagascar where several villages depend entirely on the baobab tree tanks. During this travel, she collected some soil and realized the vessels that symbolize  Baobab, Nature’s Water Tanks to raise awareness in this regard. 

The work exists between sculpture and infrastructure, suspended between use and possibility.
