WHERE: Eisenberg (DE)
COLLAB: a project by Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez

Hotel standard for a municipal hospital: the circular building of Waldkliniken Eisenberg, with its facade made of local wood and with 128 patient rooms and 246 beds, will accommodate orthopedic patients after their operations in a building that consciously puts its temporary residents at the center. The patient is the guest! The interior concept offers patients the opportunity to withdraw and enjoy privacy in the Z-shaped two-bed rooms. Spacious verandas connect the rooms, all of which face the surrounding nature. Building area15000m²

After ten years of development, planning and construction, the Hospital is now offering patients of all health insurance companies the quality stay of a star-rated hotel. But with the concept of the Healing Architecture a house that actively supports the patients in their recovery.

The circular floor plan of house really allows every patient a view into the nature of the Saale-Holzland district. Each of patient rooms – all of which correspond to a high hotel standard – also has access to a winter garden. But the house has even more to offer: among other things, smart IT provides the patients with all the important information before, during and after their visit, three restaurants offer dishes that do not taste like the regular food in hospitals.

The power of peacefulness

Surrounded by oak trees and in the middle of well-tended park grounds. The patients’ garden was awarded the Thuringian Landscape Architecture Award back in the year 2000. This garden is still in use today and, with its varying ground conditions, invites you to “exercise”: 5,000 m2 of green space and 4.6 km of walking paths
The oak leaf was chosen as the symbol of the Waldkliniken Eisenberg. The oak is a symbol of stability, strength and reliability.
Information strategy was focused on guest point of view: because of the difficulty of a circular plan, we avoid non-necessary info and boards choose the best path for the guest.
