Retention Unit
Milan and Madagascar · 2025

WHEN: 2025
WHERE: Milan and Madagascar
SIZE: Approx. 60–140 cm high
MATERIAL: Ceramic, reclaimed concrete
Retention Unit (Nature Water Tank) consists of vertical ceramic elements placed on reclaimed concrete blocks, each supporting a shallow basin.
The forms are conceived as reduced architectural structures that introduce a specific function: the ability to collect and retain water. This function remains latent until activated by environmental conditions.
The concrete bases are integral components of the work, maintaining their original surfaces and irregularities. Together, the elements establish a minimal system in which structure and function are separated and simplified.
The work starts from a reflection on water and its conscious use. In south-eastern Madagascar, Elena Pelosi visited villages that depend entirely on baobab trees as water tanks. She collected soil there and made vessels that evoke the baobab, nature’s water tank.
The work exists between sculpture and infrastructure, suspended between use and possibility.
